Meals On Wheels

Meals on Wheels is an organization that many people have heard of but don't know a whole lot about. They are a service devoted to offering healthy meal programs to those who wish to live independent lives but might not otherwise be able to properly feed themselves on a day-to-day basis. They not only deliver meals to everywhere from a Bloor Street neighborhood 35 Hayden St., for example - to Kitsilano, but they also set up congregate meals in community and senior centres. Here is some more about the history of this charity and what they are doing today.

Meals on Wheels started in Britain during the Second World War when people lost their homes (and abilities to cook) due to bombings. This service continued after the war was over and started expanding to other countries. It entered Canada in 1965 in Calgary as part of the Presbyterian Church. It was meant for elderly members of the congregation and those who were released from the hospital but were still not well enough to care for themselves. Since then, it has expanded from Acton real estate to Halifax.

Many of those running food delivery programs do not do so under the blanket of a huge charity organization like the United Way or Salvation Army. The largest group in Canada is in Nova Scotia, where there are 68 programs throughout the province. If you know of someone who's living in King West condos who needs help in this way than there is likely something existing but it might not be called Meals on Wheels. For example, in Vancouver the organization A Loving Spoonful delivers hot meals to those living with HIV/AIDS.

If you're considering donating money or time to a food delivery service than there are many different ways that you can contribute. Because all of the meals are prepared in advance, these charities usually ask for money rather than food donations. This way they can make one huge batch of food for all of the houses in Mississauga real estate, for example, that they serve. You do not need to be a master chef to volunteer your time. If you're not the best at cooking you could help with prep work or donate your services as a driver. There are also people needed to package meals. If you're running your own business, from a dental clinic to a Sutton real estate office you could also sponsor a special event.

The mission of most of the organizations of this kind is to offer food at a low or no cost. If you're thinking of getting involved than you should make sure that they are providing a service to give healthy and affordable meal options.
